Acton

Acton is west west of the CBD, bordered by Black Mountain to the west and Lake Burley Griffin in the south. The suburb is named after an original homestead ‘Acton’ originally located near the present-day National Museum.

When the Federal Capital was established in 1911 administrators erected a temporary workers camp near Acton Homestead (since demolished), for house staff managing the development of the National Capital. The then Chief Surveyor Scrivener occupied Acton Homestead during his initial survey of the capital site.
